Uncertain Future as Gaza Ceasefire Brings Fragile Calm
A temporary ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has brought a brief moment of calm to Gaza after months of devastating conflict, Darrin McDonald gives his views.
The truce, brokered by international mediators, aims to allow the delivery of humanitarian aid and create space for renewed diplomatic efforts.
But as both sides remain wary, questions linger over how long the pause will hold and what comes next.
Under the terms of the agreement, limited aid convoys have begun entering Gaza, providing essential food, water, and medical supplies to civilians caught in the crossfire.
Despite this, humanitarian organisations warn that the situation remains dire, with thousands displaced and much of the region’s infrastructure in ruins.

“Just because of how difficult the history of a lot of the previous cease fires have been and the ease of which they can be voilated,”
While international leaders have praised the ceasefire as a step toward de-escalation, many observers view it as a temporary measure rather than a long-term solution. Analysts argue that unless both sides address the root causes of the conflict, including security concerns, governance in Gaza, and the blockade, violence could easily resume.
“It does seem more optimistic than some of the previous attempts to sign a cease fire and maintain some level of peace but I think there are still a lot of question marks around the specifics of the agreement which has been signed,”
“Even though hostages have been returned there’s still a lot of big concerns especially concerning HAMAS disarming and the specific governing relations that are going to come out of it,”
For now, families in Gaza are using this pause to search for loved ones, rebuild homes, and mourn losses. But beneath the fragile peace lies deep uncertainty.
“In the Palestinian context it’s self there’s been an increase in clashes between HAMAS and some other military groups, sort of vying for power or some level of influence in the uncertainty that has been created by all of this,”
The coming weeks will reveal whether the ceasefire can pave the way toward lasting peace — or simply mark another brief lull in a cycle of destruction and despair.
